The Hely-Creek Field

The Hely Creek Marginal field is located within PPL 221 concession situated at the North-eastern edge of OML 49 of the Western Niger Delta sedimentary basin.  It is bounded to the northwest by the Abigborodo field, and to the south by the by the Kuri field. Geographically, it lies within the swamp region of the delta where seasonal floods are a common occurrence. Exploration started with the spudding of the HC-1 well in 1972 which drilled to a total depth of 12731 ftmd. The well was abandoned due to mechanical problem and a fish (824”of pipe) left in hole.

Further appraisal of the structure continued in 1994 with the drilling of HC-2 well to a total depth of 14613 ftmd. The well encountered gas condensate in about seventeen (17) reservoir sand levels with a cumulative net pay of 512 feet.

Hely Creek field has never been in production though DST/flow test and PVT measurements conducted on three reservoirs showed good indications for development. Having been declared as marginal by GOCON, the Federal Government of Nigeria through the Nigerian Upstream Production and Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) has awarded the field to Transnational Energy Limited (TEL) for development to meet the country’s aspiration to increase the national oil and gas reserves.

Reservoir petrophysical and flow properties obtained for the HC-03 well show that when completed on the intended H4.0, H5.0 and H5.1 reservoirs, the well has the potential of recovering about 64.92 Bscf and 3.78 MMSTB of gas and condensate respectively from H4.0, H5.0 and H5.1 reservoirs. Initial reservoir pressure for reservoirs in Hely Creek field ranges between 3994 psia and 8,976 pisa while temperature ranges between 209 oF and 262 oF.

HC-03 well is expected to come on stream with a combined best-case off-take rates of 968 STB/D and 16.5 MMSCF/D of condensate and gas respectively from both short and long strings when completed in the intended H4.0 and H5.1 reservoirs while H5.0 putting behind sleeve.
